High-precision estimate of g4 in the 2D Ising model
We compute the renormalized four-point coupling in the 2d Ising model using
transfer-matrix techniques. We greatly reduce the systematic uncertainties
which usually affect this type of calculations by using the exact knowledge of
several terms in the scaling function of the free energy. Our final result is
g4=14.69735(3).Comment: 17 pages, revised version with minor changes, accepted for

Renormalised four-point coupling constant in the three-dimensional O(N) model with N=0
We simulate self-avoiding walks on a cubic lattice and determine the second
virial coefficient for walks of different lengths. This allows us to determine
the critical value of the renormalized four-point coupling constant in the
three-dimensional N-vector universality class for N=0. We obtain g* =
1.4005(5), where g is normalized so that the three-dimensional
field-theoretical beta-function behaves as \beta(g) = - g + g^2 for small g. As
a byproduct, we also obtain precise estimates of the interpenetration ratio
Psi*, Psi* = 0.24685(11), and of the exponent \nu, \nu = 0.5876(2).Comment: 16 page
DESIGNING BETTER EXERGAMES: APPLICATION OF FLOW CONCEPTS AND THE FITT PRINCIPLE TO FULL BODY EXERTION VIDEO GAMES AND FLEXIBLE CHALLENGE SYSTEMS
Exercise video games have a recognized potential for widespread use as tools for effective exercise. Current exergames do not consistently strike a successful balance between the “fun gameplay” and “effective exercise” aspects of the ideal exergame. Our research into the design of better exergames applies existing gameflow research and established exercise guidelines, such as those published by the American College of Sports Medicine, to a collection of four custom exergames: Astrojumper, Washboard, Sweet Harvest and Legerdemain implement full-body motion mechanics that support different types of exercise, and vary in intended duration of play, game complexity, and level of physical challenge. Each game also implements a difficulty adjustment system that detects player performance from in-game data and dynamically adjusts game difficulty, in order to balance between a player’s fitness level and the physical challenge presented by the game. We have evaluated the games produced by our design approach through a series of user studies on players’ physiological and psychological responses to gameplay, finding that balance between challenge types (cognitive or physical) is an important consideration along with challenge-skill balance, and further, that game mechanics able to support creativity of movement are an effective means of bridging between gameplay and exercise in order to improve the player experience
Two-year follow-up of macaques developing intermittent control of the human immunodeficiency virus homolog simian immunodeficiency virus SIVmac251 in the chronic phase of infection
Off-therapy control of viremia by HIV-infected individuals has been associated with two likely players: a restricted viral reservoir and an efficient cell-mediated immune response. We previously showed that a combination of highly suppressive antiretroviral therapy and two experimental drugs, i.e., auranofin and buthionine sulfoximine, was able to reduce the viral reservoir, elicit efficient cell-mediated antiviral responses, and induce intermittent posttherapy viral load control in chronically SIVmac251-infected macaques. We here show that the macaques that had received this drug combination and then stopped antiretroviral therapy were also able to maintain low numbers of activated CD4(+) T cells at viral rebound. Moreover, these macaques consistently displayed low-level simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) diversity, which was in line with the strong and broadly reactive cell-mediated immune responses against conserved Gag antigens. Extended follow-up showed that the two macaques that had received the complete drug combination remained healthy and did not develop AIDS in 2 years of follow-up after therapy suspension. This disease-free survival is longer than twice the average time of progression to AIDS in SIVmac251-infected rhesus macaques. These results suggest that limited numbers of activated T cells at viral rebound and subsequent development of broadly reactive cell-mediated responses may be interrelated in reducing the viral reservoir
Irrelevant operators in the two-dimensional Ising model
By using conformal-field theory, we classify the possible irrelevant
operators for the Ising model on the square and triangular lattices. We analyze
the existing results for the free energy and its derivatives and for the
correlation length, showing that they are in agreement with the conformal-field
theory predictions. Moreover, these results imply that the nonlinear scaling
field of the energy-momentum tensor vanishes at the critical point. Several
other peculiar cancellations are explained in terms of a number of general
conjectures. We show that all existing results on the square and triangular
lattice are consistent with the assumption that only nonzero spin operators are
present.Comment: 32 pages. Added comments and reference
High-precision determination of the critical exponents for the lambda-transition of 4He by improved high-temperature expansion
We determine the critical exponents for the XY universality class in three
dimensions, which is expected to describe the -transition in He.
They are obtained from the analysis of high-temperature series computed for a
two-component model. The parameter is fixed such that
the leading corrections to scaling vanish. We obtain ,
, . These estimates improve previous
theoretical determinations and agree with the more precise experimental results
for liquid Helium.Comment: 8 pages, revte
Four-point renormalized coupling constant and Callan-Symanzik beta-function in O(N) models
We investigate some issues concerning the zero-momentum four-point
renormalized coupling constant g in the symmetric phase of O(N) models, and the
corresponding Callan-Symanzik beta-function. In the framework of the 1/N
expansion we show that the Callan- Symanzik beta-function is non-analytic at
its zero, i.e. at the fixed-point value g^* of g. This fact calls for a check
of the actual accuracy of the determination of g^* from the resummation of the
d=3 perturbative g-expansion, which is usually performed assuming analyticity
of the beta-function. Two alternative approaches are exploited. We extend the
\epsilon-expansion of g^* to O(\epsilon^4). Quite accurate estimates of g^* are
then obtained by an analysis exploiting the analytic behavior of g^* as
function of d and the known values of g^* for lower-dimensional O(N) models,
i.e. for d=2,1,0. Accurate estimates of g^* are also obtained by a reanalysis
of the strong-coupling expansion of lattice N-vector models allowing for the
leading confluent singularity. The agreement among the g-, \epsilon-, and
strong-coupling expansion results is good for all N. However, at N=0,1,
\epsilon- and strong-coupling expansion favor values of g^* which are sligthly
lower than those obtained by the resummation of the g-expansion assuming
analyticity in the Callan-Symanzik beta-function.Comment: 35 pages (3 figs), added Ref. for GRT, some estimates are revised,

Ridge Gap Waveguide Based Liquid Crystal Phase Shifter
In this paper, the gap waveguide technology is examined for packaging liquid crystal (LC) in tunable microwave devices. For this purpose, a line based passive phase shifter is designed and implemented in a ridge gap waveguide (RGW) topology and filled with LC serving as functional material. The inherent direct current (DC) decoupling property of gap waveguides is used to utilize the waveguide surroundings as biasing electrodes for tuning the LC. The bed of nails structure of the RGW exhibits an E-field suppression of 76 dB in simulation, forming a completely shielded device. The phase shifter shows a maximum figure of merit (FoM) of 70 °/dB from 20 GHz to 30 GHz with a differential phase shift of 387° at 25 GHz. The insertion loss ranges from 3.5 dB to 5.5 dB depending on the applied biasing voltage of 0 V to 60 V. © 2013 IEEE
VirusBoxing: A HIIT-based VR boxing game
Physical activity or exercise can improve people's health and reduce their
risk of developing several diseases; most importantly, regular activity can
improve the quality of life. However, lack of time is one of the major barriers
for people doing exercise. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can reduce
the time required for a healthy exercise regime but also bring similar benefits
of regular exercise. We present a boxing-based VR exergame called VirusBoxing
to promote physical activity for players. VirusBoxing provides players with a
platform for HIIT and empowers them with additional abilities to jab a distant
object without the need to aim at it precisely. In this paper, we discuss how
we adapted the HIIT protocol and gameplay features to empower players in a VR
exergame to give players an efficient, effective, and enjoyable exercise
experience.Comment: Corresponding author: [email protected]
